A funny and exciting radio interview with three Border Voices enthusiasts: Dana Gioia, California poet laureate; Jack Webb, founding-director of Border Voices; and Ilya Kaminsky, director of the MFA Program in Creative Writing at SDSU. Among many other things (including Dana’s successful effort to rescue jello as a dessert while vice president of General Foods) the three poets discuss Border Voices 2017, including a plan to teach poetry to seniors and get them on TV and in books.

2017 Border Voices Virtual Poetry Fair Cox 16

 Joyful children, teachers and parents filled the ITV studios last May to hear award-winning students with Poet Teachers and Jack Webb while being recorded on television. Some sat on colorful mats in the studio and participated in the poetry discussion LIVE on-air.

The new season airs Sundays at 6:30pm starting in July.

Border Voices Virtual Fairs

The Border Voices “virtual fair” tradition was started in 2010 when, for the first time in the history of the Border Voices Poetry Project the poetry fair went “high-tech”and was held on-air at the ITV studios. Everyone loved it! San Diego students join famous poets to explore Life, the Universe & EVERYTHING.

Border Voices TV shows also appear several times a week on ITV: Cox and Times Warner cable channel 16; Adelphia cable ch. 7 and USA Cable (Julian) Ch.  4

 2009: Border Voices on the Radio

 – Once there, go to the “U-T in the Community” section of the SignOnRadio home page. The show gives a delightful overview of the role of poetry in the schools, from the eyes of three people:

Jericho Brown, the famous poet, Jack Webb, Founding Director of Border Voices, and Joanna Robles, the first-place winner in the high school division in the Border Voices 2009 contest.  THIS IS A GREAT INTERVIEW.

 Other Honors

        The project won three international awards for its weekly TV show.
These included a Telly Award, a Videographer Award, and an honorable mention in The Communicator competition.

“To give you some idea of  the level of competition: to win a Telly Award, Border Voices had to successfully compete with 10,000 entries from all 50 states and many foreign countries, “ said Richard Harrison, producer-director for ITV, which is part of the San Diego County Office of Education.

“Previous winners included Sesame Workshop, Turner Classic Movies and Time Warner Cable, so you can see Border Voices is doing something right,” Harrison added.

 Other awards received by Border Voices include:

 (1) An Award of Merit at the annual convention of the California Association of Teachers of English for “outstanding contributions to the teaching of English/language arts.”

 (2) Exemplary Partnership Award from San Diego City Schools.

 (3) Celebrate Literacy Award from the Greater San Diego Reading     Association.

 (4) An Odin Award from the San Diego Writers and Editors Guild for services to the San Diego writing community.

 (5) The Copley Special Awardof Honor for services benefiting the community. 

(6) First place, Literacy-Related Project: California Newspaper Publishers Association.

 In addition, project founding director Jack Webb
received the following:

(a) A Special Achievement Award at the San Diego Book Awards.
(b) Named Distinguished Educator-Scholar of the Year by the San Diego Unified School District’s Gifted & Talented program.
