Border Voices Events & Poetry Fair

The First Annual
San Diego Festival of Books 

August 26, 2017 at Liberty Station

In partnership with San Diego Literacy & The Union Tribune we had music by harpist, Kathleen Hartshorne and Jim Moore and poetry by students and teachers. Later we performed on stage at the Children’s Pavilion.

Mikaela Ellen Little FoxMikaela Ellen, Spreckels Elementary,  Grade 3, reading her poem, “Little Fox,” to be published in the California Poets in the Schools anthology this year.  Poetry Teacher: Seretta Martin, Classroom Teacher: Millie Weil.

Background, Center: Chris Vanoy, “The Beat Poet of San Diego,” did a wonderful recital of Lewis Carol’s poem, “Jabberwocky.”

JansunJason Xiao, Speckles Elementary, Grade 4, reading his award winning poem, “Me and the Ducks,” -Boston Public Gardens. Award: First Place Upper Division. Poet Teacher: Seretta Martin, Classroom Teacher: Elizabeth Stewart.

The 24th annual Border Voices
Poetry Fair was

San Diego County Office of Education
6401 Linda Vista Road

Onstage, four poets-teachers and Jack Webb shared poetry and insight with award-winning students who are graduates of the new, expanded Border Voices program. During the filming the audience was student poets from the workshop and their parents. 

Four TV shows were filmed and will be televised in July and throughout the year on ITV, Ch. 16
to 850,000 households and 15,000 classrooms.
