First Place

A Dark Room

I come from a dark room.
I come from a beating sound
that I first heard in my mom’s belly.

I come from strong hard-working arms:
from my dad’s carpentry,
from my mom lifting rice bags and weights.

I come from a smart person who knows everything,
from my knowledge of reading,
from learning to cook with my mother.

 I come from a snake
and a fire in the darkness—
from a hissing and a crackling.

Second Place

Movie Time

It’s doggie time at the movie theater
and one hundred or more dogs have come.
I’m the lab, as black as the curtains.
We all smell popcorn
and hear  Pop    Pop    Pop.
Every dog is wearing special glasses
to watch the 3D movie

        Tower of Terror.

I sit with my buddy, spilling popcorn
all over the red velvet seats.

When the movie is over we will go home
for a doggie nap.
Have you ever taken a doggie nap
with your dog?

 Third Place

Hands

The best parts of me are my hands.
They play like a nine year old sister
messing up her brother’s hair.
They write like an author working
on her book.

My hands are busy like my mom’s
when she cooks fried rice.
They are fast as a squirrel
running for safety.
My fingers stretch like inch worms
when reaching into a bag of hot chips.

Fourth Place

Under the Tree with My Friend

I felt happy before I was born.
A baby’s cry is the black of sky,

and sometimes it sounds like hunger.
My brother sobs in the dark wind
like a soul hurting.
I write this down in my notebook,
place my sadness inside my hat.
